Sisua!

My first month in Finland has been magical. 

I arrived early on August 2nd and spent my very first week at the orientation camp in Karkku, a small town in Finland. I met the other exchange students, explored the forest, picked berries, cooked makkara (sausage) over a campfire, and visited Karkun kirkko, a stone church built in 1913. 

At camp, we also visited Tampere! I got to explore lots of iconic spots and also went into some local shops! One of my favorites spots was Tallipiha, a stable yard transformed into a shopping and event space. I also enjoyed going to Tampereen tuomiokirkko and Aleksanterin kirkko, two of the most well known churches of Finland. After a bit of sightseeing, I went to Kotipizza, where I tried... reindeer pizza!! 

After camp, I went to Lahti and met my host family! Lahti is a city in Finland known for their harbor, winter sports, and sustainability! I love getting ice cream at the harbor. The place has a strong sense of familiarity and reminds me a lot of home. 

Some of my other favorite spots in Lahti are Levykauppa Äx, Lahden historiallinen museo, iCare secondhand shop, and Kahvila Kariranta. 

School has been very interesting! I have been studying in an art program where I draw and play instruments. In Finnish culture, people respect personal space a lot and don't usually go up to others. I have had a very unique experience being with the kids in the art program! They are all very friendly and welcoming. 

My favorite place that I've been to in Finland so far is Helsinki. I love the architecture and the atmosphere. It is very convenient to go to Helsinki because of the local trains, so I am very excited to go back!

I also got to spend time at my family's summer cottage. We cooked makkara over the campfire, picked mushrooms, swam in the lake, and ate Domino cookies.

This whole month has felt so unreal and I'm so excited for what's to come!
